An amazing afternoon at MUDAS — the contemporary art museum in Calheta
It was one of those Saturdays that you don't forget easily. The sun was bright over the west coast of Madeira and our family decided to visit one of the most special places on the island — the MUDAS, Museu de Arte Contemporânea da Madeira, situated on a hill above the beautiful village of Calheta.
We took more than 360 photos — inside, outside and even from the drone! And we still feel the magic of that place. So we want to share it with you, especially if you're wondering whether it's worth taking the kids. The short answer? Absolutely yes — and then some!
A museum that looks like it's from another world
The MUDAS is not just a normal museum. The building itself, designed by the architect Paulo David and opened in 2004, is already a work of art — with modern lines that integrate harmoniously into the landscape of Calheta, like it was always meant to be there. In fact, it was nominated for the European Mies van der Rohe Prize in 2005 and received the prestigious Alvar Aalto Medal in 2012.
From the moment we arrived, our son couldn't stop pointing at things and asking questions. The building itself provokes curiosity — the volumes, the shadows, the corridors — everything invites you to explore. And that's even before going inside!
What we loved — and the kids even more!
Art that sparks curiosity
With around 400 works by artists like Lourdes Castro and Maria Helena Vieira da Silva, there are pieces that literally make the kids stop and stare. Our son spent several minutes in front of one sculpture, making up stories about it — better than any audioguide!
Spectacular lighting
The museum has a very careful lighting design that gives each piece room to shine. The rooms have a quality of natural filtered light that creates an almost magical atmosphere — the art seems to glow on its own.
Room with traditional videos
There's a special room with old videos of traditional Madeiran life — festivals, crafts, celebrations. A beautiful window into the island's past. The kids were absolutely fascinated, asking "was this before mobile phones, dad?!"
Breathtaking views over Calheta
Outside, the view over Calheta and the Atlantic Ocean is absolutely stunning. Even without a drone it's worth exploring the exterior spaces — and with the drone, we literally ran out of words. Pure magic.
"Dad, can we come back here? I want to see all the rooms again — and next time I'm bringing my sketchbook!"— Our son, 10 years old, walking out of MUDAS
From above — Calheta at 360°
One of the most special moments of the day was capturing the museum from the air with the drone. The 360° aerial photo shows perfectly how the building integrates into the Calheta landscape — the blue Atlantic, the cliffs, the green hills, and that stunning contemporary architecture that dialogues beautifully with everything around it.

Inside MUDAS — a journey through contemporary art
The rooms of MUDAS are a wonderful surprise — spacious, bright and welcoming. It's not a cramped or intimidating museum at all. There's room to breathe, to wander, to observe — perfect for exploring with children without the stress of bumping into things or being constantly hushed.
The collection spans from the 1960s right up to today, and it's absolutely wonderful to watch children's reactions to the more abstract pieces. Sometimes their imagination is far more creative than any academic explanation could ever be!

Is it worth taking the kids? 100% yes!
MUDAS surprised us in the best possible way as a family destination. Children respond incredibly well to this space — the scale of the building, the artworks that feed the imagination, the room with traditional Madeiran videos, and the freedom to explore without feeling restricted. It's one of those rare places where kids and adults are equally enchanted.
Combine the visit with a stop at the beautiful golden sand beach of Calheta just down the hill, and you have the perfect family Saturday on the west coast of Madeira. That's exactly what we did — and we came home with full hearts, tired feet, and 360 photos to prove it! 🌺
