The guide we couldn't find anywhere else
When our family first visited Madeira, we did what every parent does: we spent hours searching for kid-friendly restaurants, safe beaches, activities for toddlers, and events happening that week. The results were scattered across outdated travel blogs, tourist websites with no family lens, and TripAdvisor reviews that never quite answered the right questions.
We kept asking: Is there a high chair? Is the path stroller-friendly? Will my five-year-old actually enjoy this? The answers were never there. So we built the platform ourselves.
Madeira Kids was created to be the honest, local, family-first guide to the island. Every place is chosen because it genuinely works for families with children — not because a business paid to appear, and not because an algorithm ranked it. Local parents and residents curate everything you see here.
Our goal is simple: more families discovering Madeira confidently, spending less time researching and more time making memories.

Our values
Curated, Not Crowdsourced
Every place on Madeira Kids has been reviewed and selected by local parents. We do not rely on algorithms or mass submissions — quality over quantity, always.
Families First
We think about strollers, nap times, high chairs, and toddler meltdowns. Every recommendation is filtered through the lens of real family travel.
Always Up to Date
Madeira changes. Businesses open and close, events come and go, beaches change seasonally. We keep the platform current so you don't arrive somewhere that no longer exists.
Built for Visitors & Expats
Whether you are spending two weeks on holiday or have just moved to the island with your family, Madeira Kids is your local guide — without needing to know anyone.
Rooted in Community
We work with local family businesses, travel writers, and Madeira-based parents to keep the platform honest, local, and genuinely useful.
Free to Use
Discovering Madeira with your family should not cost anything. The platform is free for families — we sustain ourselves through partnerships with local businesses.
Why Madeira is perfect for families
Madeira is a Portuguese island in the Atlantic Ocean, roughly 1,000 km southwest of Lisbon and 700 km off the coast of Africa. It is often called the “Pearl of the Atlantic” — a name that, once you arrive, feels entirely earned.
For families, the island checks every box: it is compact enough to explore in a week yet varied enough to keep everyone entertained for months. The climate is genuinely exceptional — warm summers, mild winters, and a tropical microclimate that means something is always in bloom. The island is one of the safest destinations in Europe, with a culture that is deeply respectful of children and family life.
From the dramatic central peaks of the Pico Ruivo to the lush Laurisilva forest (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), the volcanic sea pools of Porto Moniz, the black-sand beaches of the north coast, and the colourful towns of Funchal — there is more to discover here than most visitors ever expect.
Madeira Kids exists to make sure your family discovers all of it — the well-known and the hidden, the beaches and the mountains, the rainy days and the sunny ones.
Questions families ask us
Is Madeira a good destination for families with young children?expand_more
Absolutely. Madeira is one of Europe's most underrated family destinations. The island is compact, extremely safe, has a mild climate year-round, and offers an extraordinary variety of experiences — from natural pools and levada walks to aquariums and family beaches. The local culture is warm and genuinely welcoming to children of all ages.
What is the best time of year to visit Madeira with kids?expand_more
Madeira's climate is one of its biggest advantages — temperatures range from around 18°C in winter to 26°C in summer, with very little extreme weather. Spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October) offer pleasant temperatures, fewer crowds, and great value on flights and accommodation. Summer is busy but excellent for beach and pool activities.
Are the beaches in Madeira safe for children?expand_more
Many are, but it requires some knowledge. Madeira's coastline is largely volcanic, so rocky beaches and strong Atlantic swells are common. However, there are several calm, sheltered spots — including natural lava pools like Seixal and Porto Moniz, and sandy beaches like Prainha and Calheta Beach — that are ideal for young children. We mark all of these on our platform.
