A slow and creative morning in Madeira — discover the Junk Journal & Yap workshop at Terracotta Ceramic Café, where storytelling, paper, and local collaborations come together to create meaningful memories.

Last Friday, we gathered for something truly special inside the cosy and welcoming space of Terracotta Ceramic Café. The café gently transformed into a private creative haven — an intimate setting where time seemed to slow, inviting us to reconnect with creativity, storytelling, and the simple joy of making.

The experience

Where Stories Begin on Paper

Guided by the wonderful Abby, founder of Junk Journal & Yap, we were introduced to the essence of junk journaling in the most comforting and accessible way.

"It doesn't have to be perfect."

— Abby, Junk Journal & Yap

Junk journaling is not about rules or structure. It is about memory, expression, and freedom. A wrapper from a favourite snack, a piece of a napkin, a small stamp, a receipt from a meaningful place — all of these seemingly ordinary fragments can find a home on the page.

Layer by layer, they become stories.

Moments.

Feelings.

Together, we created our very first "About Me" spread, exploring textures, ephemera, and storytelling through a process that felt both grounding and quietly joyful.

Around the table

A Table Full of Meaning

As we gathered around the table, something beautiful unfolded. This was not a typical workshop — it was a slow, intentional experience.

💬
Conversations

Flowing naturally, without agenda — the kind that only happen when hands are busy.

🤲
Slow hands

Moving thoughtfully across the page, finding meaning in each texture and fragment.

😄
Laughter

And curiosity — a shared sense of presence that made the hours disappear.

It was about creating space…

Space to pause and step away from the noise of daily life.
Space to notice the small things that usually pass unnoticed.
Space to remember, and to choose what is worth keeping.

Each journal became a reflection of its creator, filled with small, meaningful details that might otherwise be forgotten.

Local soul

Thoughtful Details, Local Soul

Adding to the experience was a thoughtful selection of collaborations that gave each journal a deeply local and personal dimension.

🇵🇹 Portuguese brand

mishmash planners

Beautifully designed planners that became the foundation of our journals — the official Madeira workshop journal, thoughtfully created to inspire creativity and intentional living.

🌸 Island heritage

Bailha Madeira stickers

Exclusive sticker sheets with delicate designs inspired by the island's rich embroidery heritage — adding an emotional, deeply local touch to every page.

Together, these elements transformed each page into something more than creative expression.

They became a reflection of place, culture, and memory.

The heart of it

Holding on to the Little Things

What made this experience truly special was its simplicity. We gathered around a table in Madeira to document life — not the big milestones, but the small, often overlooked moments.

The quiet ones. The everyday ones.

And in doing so, we discovered a different way of remembering.

🚫
Not through perfection

But through intention — choosing what matters and letting the rest go.

📄
Not polished images

But layers of paper, texture, and feeling — real and beautifully imperfect.

Even the smallest fragments

Can hold meaning — a gentle reminder that nothing is too small to remember.

Until the Next Page

As the afternoon came to a close, no one seemed in a hurry to leave. Because something had shifted — not just on the pages we created, but within the experience itself.

A sense of calm. Of connection. Of having made something that matters.

And perhaps that is what junk journaling is truly about: holding on to moments — in the most human, imperfect, and beautiful way.
